Here is an experimental look at forecast timing of the rainfall today and tonight,
as well as the highlighted period where heavier rainfall will be more regularly seen.

The evening commute is expected to be slowed due to the rain.

Waves of soaking rainfall will occur today and tonight, with 1 to 2 inches for many locations,
although a maximum swath of over two inches and possibly to around 3 inches is expected for a portion of northern Illinois.
Localized poor draining, minor flooding will probably be seen in spots.
Some of the heavier rain will fall ahead of and during the late day/evening commute.
Isolated thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening.
Showers will gradually end late tonight into early Wednesday morning.

The four day forecast depicts a wet day and night ahead, with rain becoming steady by midday and persisting into the evening.

The rain will end early Wednesday morning, with gusty northwest winds ushering in cooler air.

Temperatures will be more seasonable the remainder of the week and into the weekend, when dry conditions are largely expected.
