Weekend Incidents
PEDESTRIAN HIT AND RUN FATALITY – On Friday, January 17, 2025, at approximately
7:45 p.m., the Rockford Police Department responded to a vehicle vs. pedestrian traffic
crash on the Auburn Street Bridge. When officers arrived, they observed the victim, 32-
year-old Martavion Howard, lying on the bridge. He was transported to a local hospital
where he died from his injuries.
MURDER – On Saturday, January 18, 2025, at approximately 2:45 p.m., Rockford Police
officers responded to a local hospital for a gunshot victim which officers later learned
occurred in the 4800 block of Javelin. The victim, 22-year-old Darian Bunnell, was
transported to a local hospital for a life-threatening gunshot wound. He later died from
his injury.
UNLAWFUL USE OF A WEAPON BY A FELON – On Saturday, January 18, 2025, at
approximately 12:40 a.m., Rockford Police SCOPE officers conducted a traffic stop on a
vehicle near Soper and Blaisdell. During the stop, SCOPE officers located and recovered a
loaded handgun from inside the vehicle. Both occupants were taken into custody,
lodged in the County Jail, and later released by the Courts.
The Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and authorized the
below-mentioned charges.

POSSESSION OF A MACHINE GUN BY A FELON – On Saturday, January 18, 2025, at
approximately 9:40 p.m., Rockford Police SCOPE officers responded to a call for shots
fired outside of a residence in the 3000 block of Horton Street. During the investigation,
officers located and recovered two loaded firearms: A loaded handgun with a laser,
extended magazine, and automatic switch (reported stolen out of Dubuque, Iowa), and a
loaded handgun with a flashlight. Two 17-year-old males were taken into custody and
lodged in Juvenile Detention and Michael Hendricks was also taken into custody and
lodged in the County Jail.
The Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and authorized the
below-mentioned charges for this case and others.
