A arrest for a murder from last year in downtown Rockford has been announced by Rockford Police today.

At approximately 3:35 am on Saturday, July 15th of 2023,  Rockford Police responded to 202 W State Street, at the Burnham Lofts, in reference to a report of multiple shots fired.

Upon arrival after officers were able to make entry to the building, they were advised that a shooting victim was on the rooftop.

Officers located 24 year old Myles Seward suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.  He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Officers learned that there was a party on the rooftop and a verbal fight escalated into shots being fired at the victim.

Rockford Police Detectives did a follow up investigation into the murder and identified the suspect as 25 year old Martavius Young.

Rockford Police got a warrant approved for Young’s arrest today and officers found him near a hotel in the 6500 block of East State Street. Young, a felon, was found with a gun and arrested. Young faces a first degree murder charge along with three other charges for weapons offenses.
