Worker Trapped in Steel Collapse at Rockford Construction Site
Incident at Former Hilander Grocery Store Nearly Turns Fatal
A construction worker narrowly escaped a life-threatening injury Tuesday afternoon after a serious structural collapse at a worksite in Rockford.
Crews were in the process of converting the former Hilander grocery store—located in the 2500 block of Mulford Road—into a new gym when a section of steel framework suddenly collapsed. The falling steel struck a crane, shattering the cab’s glass and trapping the operator inside.
According to the Rockford Fire Department, the worker was pinned for nearly an hour as technical rescue teams worked meticulously to free him. Officials emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that had the beam fallen even 1 inch slightly closer, the outcome could have been fatal.

In a striking twist of fate, Rockford Fire personnel had just completed a rescue training drill earlier that same day—almost identical to the real incident they responded to.
The injured worker was successfully extricated and transported to a local hospital, where he is expected to recover.

Crane Operator Seriously Injured in Construction Accident on N. Mulford Road
A crane operator was critically injured Monday afternoon in a traumatic construction accident on Rockford’s east side.
At approximately 2:08 p.m., emergency responders were dispatched to the intersection of North Mulford Road and Spring Creek Road after receiving reports that a crane operator had been impaled by an object at a construction site.
Within minutes, Rockford Fire Department units were on scene.
At 2:09 p.m., the specialized MD-1 medical response unit from Mercyhealth was requested to assist, followed by the dispatch of the department’s technical rescue team at 2:10 p.m. due to the complex nature of the injuries and scene conditions.
By 2:14 p.m., both the 2nd District chief and the operations chief were also en route to coordinate command and rescue operations.
The incident prompted a full technical rescue response, and the condition of the injured worker has not been publicly disclosed. No other injuries were reported.
This is a developing story. Authorities have not yet released additional details about the cause of the accident or the identity of the individual involved.
