On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at approximately 4:32 p.m., Rockford Police
officers responded to the Rockford Mass Transit District (RMTD) bus stop at the
intersection of Broadway and S. 5th Street for a report of someone punching the bus
driver. Upon arrival, officers met with the 69-year-old bus driver and observed that his
left eye was swollen shut. The injury was deemed serious, and he was transported to a
local hospital.
Security video and audio footage from the bus showed the suspect and a female
acquaintance sneaking onto the bus without paying. When confronted by the bus driver,
they both refused to pay and get off the bus. The bus driver called for security and
remained in his seat. The suspect approached the bus driver and spat on him. The bus
driver followed the suspect off the bus, and the suspect punched him in the face.
Rockford Police Violent Crime (VC) Detectives investigated the case and identified the
suspect as 24-year-old John Davis. Earlier this afternoon, detectives and Rockford
Housing Authority (RHA) officers located Davis in an RHA housing unit in the 1400 block
of Meadow Court. Davis attempted to get away, but they were ultimately able to take
him into custody. Detectives learned that Davis recently arrived in Rockford and
suspected he was illegally living in the RHA unit with the aforementioned female
acquaintance; he was issued a lifetime ban from all RHA properties.
After a review of the facts of the case, the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office
authorized the charges listed below. Davis was lodged at the Winnebago County Jail.

Aggravated Battery (Great Bodily Harm / Senior Citizen)
Resisting Arrest
