We do a lot of incredible things at the City of Rockford.
From massive infrastructure improvements to providing assistance to those most in need, our team works every day to improve the lives of our residents.
One of our most successful initiatives is the Rockford Promise NIU Scholarship Program. Here’s an excerpt from a recent article in NIU Today-
NIU welcomed 130 freshmen to the program this fall, bringing the total of Rockford Promise Scholars on campus to 365. The average high school grade point average of the incoming scholars was 3.5.
For Rockford Promise Scholar Fabian Torres, a junior industrial management and engineering technology major, the program has allowed him to focus on his studies without the added burden of worrying about how to pay for college.
“Since I was a little kid, I always wanted to be an engineer,” he said. “Thanks to NIU, it’s happening.”
“Being able to go to college because of Rockford Promise is taking a weight off my shoulders.”
NIU’s Rockford Promise Scholars are demonstrating remarkable academic success, with a first-year retention rate of 85%—above the university average, said Sol Jensen, vice president of enrollment management, marketing and communications.
“These students are thriving both academically and personally, supported by comprehensive mentorship and advising programs that help them navigate their college experience,” Jensen said. “This initiative not only provides access to higher education for more students, but it also will strengthen the future workforce of the Rockford region.”
I am incredibly proud of this program. We are providing the youth in this community with hope and opportunity, transforming not only their lives but also the lives of their families. This impact will shape the future of our entire community.
