Rockford Residents Set to Receive Water Service Letters
ROCKFORD, Ill. – The City of Rockford has completed an inventory of every service line within its water distribution system, as mandated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). This comprehensive assessment is a crucial step in ensuring the safety of our drinking water.
Residents will soon receive communication from the City if their property is identified as having a lead service line, a galvanized service line, or if the material of the service line could not be accurately determined. For properties where the material is unknown, the letters encourage residents to complete an online survey. This survey will provide guidance on how to accurately identify their water service material.
Properties with confirmed lead or galvanized service lines will be added to our replacement list. The City is committed to replacing all lead-containing water service lines at no cost to residents as part of our ongoing efforts to ensure a safe water supply.
It is important to note that lead is not present in Rockford’s source water (groundwater) or in the treated drinking water. Lead contamination in drinking water typically results from the corrosion of lead service lines and older household plumbing. Rockford’s source water is naturally hard due to calcium carbonate and has a neutral pH. The minerals in hard water create a protective coating inside plumbing, which helps to prevent lead from dissolving into the drinking water. Additionally, the City employs corrosion control treatment in compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule, further protecting residents from lead exposure.
