On Saturday, August 3, 2024 at approximately 10:38pm, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office along with Boone County District #2 Fire, responded to an accident on Poplar Grove Rd. south of Marengo Rd.
Preliminary investigation shows that a Ford F350, being driven by Justin S. Lee, 23 years old of Belvidere, IL was traveling southbound on Poplar Grove Rd. The vehicle left the roadway and overturned several times. A 16-year-old female, from Machesney Park, was ejected from the vehicle and transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. The 16-year-old later died from her injuries.
After reviewing the case with the Boone County States Attorney’s Office, Lee was charged with Aggravated DUI of alcohol causing great bodily harm (Class 4 Felony) and DUI over .08 (Class A Misdemeanor). A Class 4 Felony is punishable of 1-3 years in IL Department of Corrections and a Class A Misdemeanor is punishable of up to 1 year in jail. Lee remains in custody at the Boone County Jail.
Members of the public are reminded that these are only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt. Every defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the State’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
