100-Day Unsheltered Challenge
ROCKFORD, Ill. – The City of Rockford Health and Human Services Department (HHS) announces its recent participation in the 100 Day Unsheltered Challenge, along with other partners from the Northern Illinois Homeless Coalition (NIHC).
NIHC partners concluded a 100-Day Challenge focused on better understanding and addressing the challenges connected to unsheltered homelessness on May 22. Cohorts from Rockford, Springfield, Suburban Cook County and Will County participated in the challenge with technical support from RE!INSTITUTE and the Supportive Housing Providers Association. The initiative was made possible through the Illinois Office to Prevent and End Homelessness.
This effort kicked off in February when 10 people from HHS, Rockford Fire Department MIH, Winnebago County Health Department, Carpenter’s Place, Rockford Rescue Mission, Rosecrance and Shelter Care Ministries/Jubilee Center attended a two-day summit in Joliet. The team of partners coordinated efforts through weekly meetings and integration with ongoing NIHC services used on street outreach, coordinated entry and supportive housing. The Veteran’s Administration was not able to attend the kick off, but did participate in the weekly meetings/work.
In total, this group was able to get 28 individuals housed within the 100-day Challenge period. Those housed went to a variety of locations and were also connected to ongoing services, as needed. Of the 28 who were housed, 13 were over the age of 50 and 21 had a diagnosed disability.
