On Thursday, May 2, 2024, at approximately 6:30 p.m.,
Rockford Police
officers observed a red ATV driving near N. Main and Whitman Streets.
The ATV stopped at the
red light at the intersection of N. Main and Whitman.
Officers stopped behind the ATV and one of
the officers exited the squad car and attempted to make contact with the driver.
As the officer
approached, the ATV drove off into the intersection,
popped a “wheelie”, and collided with a vehicle.
The driver fell off the ATV, got back on,
and then drove off while an officer attempted to run after him.
The ATV continued to drive down Whitman Street onto N. 2 nd Street.
A few days later, the driver was identified as Xavier Hearns.
After a review of the facts of the case, The Winnebago County State’s
Attorney’s Office authorized warrants for
Aggravated Fleeing to Elude, Resisting Arrest, and
various traffic citations.
Hearns was lodged in the County Jail on May 22, 2024,
and has since
been released.
