Our Opinion:
What Allegedly Happened

Based on the current information that has been provided to us.

Most of the outcomes are not known or final.

Update Per RFD:

The Rockford Fire Department responded to the report of a fire at the Luther Center, on the 9th floor of the 15 story residential high rise building, yesterday afternoon at approximately 2:45 pm.
Crews received information that the fire sprinklers had activated and there was smoke and fire on the 9th floor.
Rockford Fire crews worked to extinguish the fire in an electrical room and brought the fire under control in about 20 minutes.

During the investigation, major damage to the buildings electrical systems was found and the power could not be restored to the residential units.

Fire officials say the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, the Winnebago County Emergency Management Agency and the Forest City Church helped find emergency sheltering for the displaced residents, 85 residents in total were housed in emergency shelters.
The building was secured by security professionals and the Rockford Fire units demobilized in an orderly fashion.
There was a minor injury to one firefighter/fire service professional. No residents were injured.

The damage to the building is estimated at around $500,000.

Allegedly What May Have Happened:   High Rise Structure Fire

Alleged Approx. Location:   111 W State Street, Luther Center Apts

 Alleged Approx. Time:   2:45 pm

At approximately 2:45 this afternoon emergency personnel were called to 111 W State Street, at the Luther Center Apartments, for reports of a possible structure fire.

Initial reports indicated that smoke is visible on the 9th floor. The Rockford Fire Department confirmed once on scene that this is a working structure fire.

We received reports that some of the sprinkler heads are allegedly missing and possibly not working during this fire.
The power was reported to be out from a 5th floor resident currently on oxygen. Some occupants are also said to be in wheelchairs and have no means for evacuating the building.

The elevators have reportedly been checked and nobody was reported to be trapped inside during this fire.

The cause of the fire is unknown. This is a developing situation. We will post an update as information becomes available.

Avoid the area awhile or expect possible delays.

UPDATE: A firefighter was transported by ambulance to the hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.
