Trigic Update from Rockford PD:

Here are the basic details regarding the officer-involved shooting this afternoon.
Please understand that this is what is available at this time.

Rockford Police Department officers were investigating reports of a domestic situation that initially started on Jacqueline Drive.  An adult male suspect was located a short time later in the 2900 block of 11th Street.

Gunfire was exchanged between a Rockford Police K9 Officer and the suspect.

The Rockford Police K9 was shot and did not survive.

The suspect sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg and is being treated at a local hospital.

Chief Redd immediately contacted the Winnebago Boone County Integrity Task Force and the investigation was turned over. Any further response will be from the Task Force or the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Allegedly What May Have Happened:   Possible Officer Involved Shooting

Alleged Approx. Location:   2900 block of Kinsey St

 Alleged Approx. Time:   3:20 pm

At approximately 3:20 this afternoon emergency personnel were called to the 2900 block of Kinsey Street in Rockford for reports of a shooting victim.

Details are minimal, although we cannot hear RPD because they are encrypted, we can sometimes hear ISP (Illinois State Police) chatter on the scanner. In regards to this incident dispatch stated “10-78, shots fired, K9 down, suspect down.”

Bystanders said to have heard up to 20 gunshots.

One person has been transported by ambulance to a local hospital from the scene.

The extent of any injuries is unknown at this time.

We will update as soon as more information becomes available.

Avoid the area!!

*Additional reports coming in stated the K9 did die on scene. The suspected shooter of the K9 was also said to be shot. We are still getting conflicting reports on the alleged suspect’s condition.

Jaimie Cox Foundation posted this on their social media:

We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Rockford Illinois Police Department’s K9 Nyx.
Nyx was shot and killed while tracking down a suspect on Sunday, January 28th, 2024. When officers approached the suspect, gunfire was exchanged and K-9 Nyx was shot and killed. The suspect sustained a non life-threatening gunshot wound. We have been informed that Nyx’s handler is okay. Further details are unavailable to us at this time.

K9 Nyx was a Belgian Malinois from Belarus and completed her training in November of 2018. Nyx was trained in narcotics detection, evidence recovery, human tracking, and apprehension. Nyx was the city’s first female K9.

Police K9s exemplify selfless dedication, willingly placing themselves in harm’s way to safeguard officers and the community every day. Their unwavering commitment involves risking their well-being during dangerous operations, demonstrating a level of sacrifice that mirrors the bravery exhibited by their human counterparts. These loyal companions play a vital role in law enforcement as they stand beside officers in the pursuit of justice and public safety.

We extend our deepest gratitude for Nyx’s unwavering service.

As we mourn her passing, let us honor her memory by ensuring we support the entities responsible for maintaining Rockford Police Department’s K9 program. All donations to this post will go to the Rockford Police Department K9 Unit and the non-profit organization Friends of Rockford Police K-9 Unit.

The Jaimie Cox Foundation, in a heartfelt gesture, pledges $1,500 to each organization.
