City of Rockford Press Release:
The Family Peace Center was recently awarded $200,000 from the Winnebago County Community Mental Health Board (WCCMHB) to support and expand staff and survivor mental health and wellness programming.
Many survivors who seek help at the Family Peace Center are experiencing trauma and mental health symptoms and want to seek counseling. However, counselors are running wait lists, often months long. Through consultation with therapists, this project will expand the capacity of the Family Peace Center staff’s ability to provide improved mental health support while survivors wait to be seen.
The funding will also support the current Training and Care Coordinator who is dedicated to creating culturally-relevant, trauma-informed, accessible wellness opportunities for survivors of domestic and sexual violence and the staff who support them. A case manager will also be hired to work directly with survivors who may be experiencing additional barriers due to the trauma they’ve experienced and its impact on their mental health.
Emerging research from trauma experts continues to demonstrate that alternative wellness opportunities, like those that will be supported by this funding, can be beneficial in healing for trauma survivors. Furthermore, the Family Peace Center places a high priority on the well-being of its staff members, who are often exposed to traumatic experiences. This focus on staff well-being not only enhances their overall wellness but also service delivery while decreasing incidents of burnout. Alternative wellness opportunities, such as yoga, acupuncture and support groups, can be beneficial in healing for trauma survivors and will be available to both staff and survivors.
WCCMHB receives funding through a half-cent sales tax which was approved by Winnebago County residents in March 2020.
