Murder Charges/Public Assistance Needed
ROCKFORD, IL – On Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at approximately 8:40 p.m., Rockford Police
officers responded to the 400 block of S. Independence for reports of shots fired. Upon
arrival, officers observed three gunshot victims, a 38-year-old male with life threatening
injuries and two male victims, ages 30 and 35, with serious injuries. A short time later,
officers were notified of a walk-in shooting victim, a 36-year-old male, at a local hospital
with a life-threatening gunshot wound. The 38-year-old male victim, Charles Gholson,
succumbed to his injuries sustained in the shooting.
Rockford Police Gang Unit Detectives continued to investigate the murder, and identified
two suspects as 33-year-old Mario Perkins and 31-year-old Edmond Lilly. On October 20,
2023, after a review of the facts of the case, The Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s
Office authorized the charges listed below. Perkins is currently in the Winnebago County
Jail on unrelated charges, and Lilly is NOT in custody at this time. The Rockford Police
Department is asking for the public’s assistance with any information on the
whereabouts of Edmond Lilly. Please see the photo below and contact us using any of the
