On World Homelessness Day, Rockford Marks Progress Toward Ending Homelessness
ROCKFORD, Ill. – Today, the City of Rockford marked World Homelessness Day by detailing the progress that it has made toward ending homelessness as part of the Built for Zero initiative, led by national nonprofit Community Solutions.
“On World Homelessness Day, we recognize these milestones and acknowledge the challenging journey ahead,” said Beth Sandor, chief program officer at Community Solutions. “With a data-driven, human-centered approach, we can transform our support systems and turn our vision for ending homelessness into a reality.”
In their work to solve homelessness for all populations, Winnebago and Boone Counties has achieved several milestones:
- 381 households were housed in 2022.
- The first community in Built for Zero to reach and sustain functional zero, a measurable end state, for veteran and chronic homelessness.
- Working to be the first community to solve homelessness for all populations, by reaching functional zero for all .
- Recorded quality, by-name data on every person experiencing homelessness as a youth. This data enables Winnebago and Boone Counties to track whether homelessness is declining or increasing from month to month.
- Received additional funding to help seriously mentally ill people who are unsheltered so that they too can be housed.
Built for Zero is a movement and methodology of 107 U.S. cities and counties, including Rockford, committed to using data to measurably and equitably end homelessness for entire populations. Winnebago and Boone Counties work to achieve and sustain “functional zero,” a measurable milestone in which the number of people entering homelessness is fewer than the number of people a community can house in a given month.
“Homelessness is an issue that affects our whole community–it is a public health issue, a criminal justice issue and an education system issue. We are proud of the work that we have done to prove that homelessness is solvable, but the path to ending homelessness for everyone will take the whole community.” said Angie Walker, homeless program coordinator for the City of Rockford.
