UPDATE from the Rockford FD:
At 0327 hours, on Thursday, May 4th, the Rockford Fire Department responded to a report of a garage
on fire. The first fire truck arrived in 3 minutes and 27 seconds and reported heavy fire in an detached
garage with a vehicle inside the garage. Hoselines were deployed to fight the fire in the garage, but the
fire had already extended to a three family apartment building to the south and a two family residence
to the north. Additional fire companies were requested to assist in controlling the fires in the three
structures. In total, 5 Engines and 2 Ladders were used to bring the incident under control.
The fire moved quickly through the second floor of the apartment building to the south and caused fire
fighters to evacuate and fight the fire from the exterior. This building was under renovation and
unoccupied. A demolition company was called in to demolish the building due to extensive fire
damage. The building was valued at $70,000 and is a total loss.
The two family home to the north suffered fire damage to a second floor window. The fire was
contained to that area. The estimated loss to that building is $30,000. There were two families living in
this residence. The American Red Cross is assisting six children and four adults with temporary
housing.
The single car garage is a total loss and estimated at $30,000. There were no injuries to civilians or
firefighters as a result of this fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
