Few days later, the suspect long gone.
Police finally release information.
On Saturday evening around 7:30 p.m., a Rockford
Police officer was assisting a motorist with a disable vehicle on Ethel Avenue when flagged down
by a 42-year-old man who advised that as he was driving on Prospect Street with two teenagers,
his vehicle was rear-ended by another vehicle.
The vehicle that struck his vehicle backed up,
pulled up along the side of his vehicle, and then backed up again and parked behind him. He
exited his vehicle to inspect the damage and observed minor scratches.
As he was reaching into his car, one of the subjects from the other vehicle brandished a gun and told him “don’t move or
I’ll kill you.”
The man was able to get into his car and drive away.
The suspect is described as a black male, dark clothing, mask, average height and weight, possibly early 20’s, driving a maroon sedan with temporary plates.
Earlier in the day, an adult female traveling with her two young children had a similar incident
happen. She observed the masked suspect getting out of his car and feared for their safety, so
she sped away. Note: police did not provide this location, but it was near Carolina ave.
Note: We have been told there were 6 other incidents.
Police have not released any information on those.
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: The Rockford Police Department urges drivers involved in
similar accidents/intentional crashes to call an officer to the scene immediately. If such an
incident happens to you, remember it is a common and lawful practice to continue to a safe, well
lit area, such as a service station, police or fire station, to exchange insurance information.
Here are a few more tips:
Stay in your car with the door locked. Do not exit your vehicle.
Call 911 immediately.
If you can, write down the make, model, and license plate number of the vehicle
that hit you, and note the driver’s description.
If the vehicle leaves, note in which direction it traveled.
Note anything unique about the vehicle like if it had a cracked windshield, missing
hubcaps, bumper stickers or had missing or broken side mirrors.
