As rain onsets, there have been numerous reports early this evening of light sleet (ice pellets)

This should be brief, apart from north of I-88 and west of the metro
where it may last longer and mix with a wet snow that could briefly accumulate.

Here are the Wednesday late afternoon update graphics
for the wet and blustery weather ahead tonight and foggy,
drizzly weather Thursday morning.

Here is a more detailed forecast look at tonight into Thursday morning across the area. The key for tonight is wet and blustery area-wide with the chance for some wet snow to mix in this evening in far northern Illinois. As rain tapers to drizzle very late tonight fog will likely develop that will continue into Thursday morning, some of which may be dense. Plan for extra travel time during the morning commute.
