Rockford Man Charged with Drug and Weapon Offenses

– On Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at approximately 7:40 p.m., Rockford Police
patrol and SCOPE officers responded to a residence in the 600 block of 12th Street for reports of a
domestic disturbance and possible shots fired. Upon arrival, officer’s initial attempts to contact
the residents went unanswered, but officers observed spent shell casings and several occupants
inside the residence. A short time later, Jorge Herrera-Avila exited the residence, followed by five
other occupants. All occupants were detained at that time.

During the investigation, SCOPE officers located and recovered two handguns, one with an automatic “switch” and one with an attached laser light, three other handguns, one with a defaced serial number, a rifle and a
shotgun. SCOPE officers also recovered over 994 grams of cannabis. Herrera-Avila was taken into
custody and lodged in the County Jail. All other occupants were released.

After a review of the facts of the case, The Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office
authorized the charges listed below.

Jorge Herrera-Avila, 20, Rockford

Unlawful Use of a Weapon

Possession with Intent to Deliver Cannabis
Possession of a Firearm with Defaced Serial Number
No Valid FOID

The charges against him are merely accusations. He is considered innocent unless proven guilty
in a court of law.
