Here is a look at the forecast timing for when snow is expected to move into the area this afternoon and evening, as well as expected timing for precipitation type changes through Saturday. The greatest impacts are expected this evening when moderate to possibly heavy snow is forecast, resulting in hazardous road conditions during the evening commute. Snow will switch over to sleet/freezing rain from south to north later tonight, becoming mostly rain by Saturday morning south of I-90. Any lingering light rain Saturday morning will then transition back to snow showers during the day on Saturday as cold air moves in behind a surface cold front.
As the storm system that will bring a wintry mix to the area this afternoon and tonight moves off to the east on Saturday, a much colder air mass will be driven into the area by very strong westerly winds gusting up to 45 mph. Scattered snow showers or squalls will be possible Saturday afternoon, with even some patchy blowing snow possible in open areas of portions of northern Illinois. The gusty winds will continue through Saturday night, with the coldest air of the winter so far. Wind chill values will plunge to 10 to 20 degrees below zero by Sunday morning.
