UPDATE

On Saturday, May 12, 2018, shortly before 5:00 p.m. Rockford Police Department patrol officers responded to a residence in the 1100 block of Fairview Avenue in reference to a shooting incident. When they arrived officers located the victim, a 16-year-old male, who was suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head. Rockford Fire Department personnel also responded to the scene and determined that the victim was deceased.

Detectives from the Rockford Police Department conducted a follow-up investigation into the shooting. Based on the information available at this time, the shooting appears to have been an accident and no foul play is suspected.

The investigation was reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office. As a result, charges were authorized against a 16-year-old juvenile male, who was with the victim at the time of the shooting. The juvenile male was later lodged in the Winnebago County Juvenile Detention Center on the listed charges. Due to the suspect’s age, his name and photo are not available for release.

ARRESTED: Juvenile Male 16-years-old Rockford, IL
CHARGES: Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapons

The charges against the suspect are merely accusations and not evidence of his guilt. As with defendants in all criminal cases he is considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.

This is an on-going investigation and no further details are available at this time. Further information will be released should it become available.

UPDATE: Officials confirm a young man is dead. They have not officially said how the man died. Winnebago County Coroner is investigating, and will provide more information later on.
