Rockford Scanner™: Suspicious Person Acting Like A City Worker

On 12-15-20 at approximately 2 PM, Janesville Police were sent to the 1600 block of Liberty Ln. for a suspicious person complaint. It was learned the day before, on 12-14-20 at 2:30 PM, a male subject gained entry to a home after the elderly female resident assumed he worked for the Janesville Water Department.

The subject was wearing a lanyard with a photo ID and drove a blue vehicle. The suspect asked the female to turn on the hot water and he checked it with some sort of laser device. The suspect looked around the residence but no theft occurred. After the victim asked if he was going to change out the water meter, the suspect replied it wasn’t needed at this time and left the residence. The suspect’s identity is unknown and there is no further description.

The Janesville Water Department is currently working in the area changing out water meters and transmitters. Citizens are reminded the Janesville Water Department sends out notices via mail to schedule appointments.

Janesville Water employees wear identification as City of Janesville employees, drive vehicles and wear clothing identifying them as City of Janesville employees.

As always citizens should use caution when allowing strangers into their home.
