Winnebago County State’s Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross announces that Gina M. Colwell (DOB: 6/21/1978) was sentenced to seven years and six months in the Illinois Department of Corrections by the Honorable Judge Brendan Maher.
The defendant is subject to three years of Mandatory Supervised Release during which time she will also serve a consecutive sentence of sex offender probation for probation for 48 months once she is released from prison.
As part of her sentence, Colwell will also have to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life. The defendant pled guilty to Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child in July, 2019 and Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse on October 2, 2019.
In February of 2016, Roscoe Police began an investigation after receiving complaints of sexual abuse by the defendant, Gina Colwell. The abuse involved two children under the age of 13.
Detectives conducted a follow up investigation and learned that Colwell sexually assaulted a child under the age of 13 multiple times between 2014 and 2016 until it was reported to the police. The investigation also revealed that Colwell sexually abused another minor child under the age 13.
Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child is a Class X Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 6-60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by three years of Mandatory Supervised Release. Colwell was sentenced to seven years and six months in the Department of Corrections which will be served at 85%.
Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse is a Class 2 Felony that is punishable by a sentence of either probation or 3-7 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by two years of Mandatory Supervised Release. Colwell was sentenced to 48 months of probation for this offense. The sentences will be served consecutively.
