City of Rockford Updates Winter Weather Terminology to Simplify Communication
ROCKFORD, Ill. – The City of Rockford is updating its winter weather terminology to make communications clearer and easier for residents to understand.
Previously, the City used the term “Snow Emergency” - a standard municipal term - to announce odd/even parking restrictions. However, these restrictions can be required for a variety of winter conditions, including ice or other hazardous situations, and the old terminology sometimes caused unnecessary concern. Many residents understandably associated a Snow Emergency with dangerous travel conditions, when in most cases it simply meant we were taking preemptive action or beginning residential plowing and needed to have cars parked on one side of the street.
Key Changes:
- Going forward, we will declare “Odd/Even Parking Restrictions are in effect”, instead of using the term “Snow Emergency” for routine residential plowing.
- The term “Snow Emergency” will be reserved only for major winter storms, when travel is strongly discouraged and residents are advised to remain off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
“This clarification is intended to make our communications simpler and easier to understand, helping residents know exactly what to expect throughout the winter season,” says Mayor Tom McNamara.
