Commercial Fire With Visible Flames Reported on West State Street Saturday Night

UPDATE via RFD:

Rockford Fire Department crews responded to a commercial structure fire Saturday evening at 921 West State Street,
where heavy fire conditions were encountered inside an unoccupied building used for storage,
according to an official incident update released by the department.

The fire was reported at approximately 8:46 p.m. on February 7, 2026.
Upon arrival, firefighters found significant fire involvement on the first floor of the structure.
The building was confirmed to be vacant at the time of the incident and contained large quantities of stored materials, including pallets loaded with cardboard, plastics, and Styrofoam, which contributed to the intensity of the fire conditions encountered by crews.

Fire officials stated that the primary body of fire was knocked down relatively quickly;
however, the volume and type of stored materials required a second alarm response.

Additional resources were needed to remove debris and conduct extensive overhaul operations to ensure
all remaining hot spots were fully extinguished and no hidden fire remained within the structure.

A total of 31 firefighters responded to the incident, including five engines, three ladder trucks, two district chiefs, and one ambulance.
The initial response time was reported as approximately two minutes. No civilian injuries or deaths were reported, and no firefighter injuries were documented during the incident.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined, and no estimated dollar loss has been released at this time.
Fire officials confirmed that no occupants were inside the building when the fire occurred.

Unknown if occupied, unoccupied or vacant

A commercial structure fire was reported Saturday night on Rockford’s west side, prompting a large response from the Rockford Fire Department.

At approximately 8:46 PM CST, fire crews were dispatched to a reported commercial fire at 921 W State Street.
Initial reports indicated visible flames coming from the building upon arrival, confirming an active fire condition.
Reported to be a 5 story structure.

Multiple Rockford Fire Department units were assigned to the incident.
Engine companies, ladder companies, command staff, and medical support units responded to the scene.
Units reported on scene included MED06, RD01, RD02, RE01, RE02, RE06, RL01, and RL02, with additional units RE08 and RI02 initially en route.

Firefighters worked to assess conditions, establish command, and begin fire suppression operations.
Due to the nature of a commercial occupancy and the presence of visible flames, the response reflected a heightened operational posture to protect surrounding structures and ensure firefighter safety.

At this time, no official information has been released regarding injuries, the cause of the fire, or the extent of damage.
The status of occupants inside the building has not been publicly confirmed. As with all active fire scenes, conditions can change rapidly as crews continue operations.

Traffic in the area of West State Street may have experienced delays while emergency vehicles operated on scene.
Residents and motorists were advised to avoid the area to allow firefighters and emergency personnel to work safely and efficiently.

This incident remains active, and further updates will be provided as confirmed information becomes available from official sources.
