Rockford Fire Department crews responded Tuesday afternoon to a reported waterflow alarm at a commercial property on the city’s northwest side, where initial information indicated active flooding inside the building.
The incident occurred at 3108 North Rockton Avenue in Rockford, where fire crews were dispatched after a waterflow alarm was triggered, a system designed to alert authorities when water is moving through a building’s fire suppression system. Such alarms are often associated with sprinkler activation but can also be caused by mechanical failures or broken pipes.
According to radio traffic and incident details, responding firefighters made multiple attempts to contact individuals associated with the business but were unable to reach anyone on scene or by phone. With no immediate contact made, crews began assessing the situation to determine the source of the alarm.
Preliminary information suggested that a pipe may have burst inside the building, resulting in water actively flowing and flooding parts of the structure. No fire or smoke conditions were reported, and there were no immediate reports of injuries.
Due to the potential for structural or code-related concerns stemming from the flooding, a building inspector was requested and en route to evaluate the property. Building inspectors are typically called in these situations to assess safety issues such as water damage, electrical hazards, or structural integrity concerns before a property can be reoccupied.
Rockford Fire Department units assigned to the call included RD01, RE01, and RL02. The incident was officially marked closed at approximately 1:19 p.m. CST, with a total on-scene time of about 28 minutes. Fire crews cleared once the situation was stabilized and no further immediate hazards were identified.
At this time, the extent of the water damage remains unknown, and it is unclear how long the flooding may have been occurring prior to the alarm activation. No additional information has been released regarding the business affected or the cause of the suspected pipe failure.
As with all developing incidents, details may be updated if official information becomes available from the Rockford Fire Department or city officials.
