Main Street and Auburn Street Roundabout
Lane Reduction Pilot Program
Weather permitting, on Sunday, June 2nd starting at 4:00 p.m. the roundabout at Main Street (Illinois Route 2) and Auburn Street will be closed to traffic for restriping of the roundabout. The roundabout is expected to be reopened to traffic on Monday June 3rd at 6:00 a.m. as a single lane roundabout. The City, with the support of the Illinois Department of Transportation, is beginning a pilot program of reducing the roundabout at Main Street and Auburn Street to one lane. The multi-lane roundabout opened in 2013 and continues to see multiple accidents a month. The overwhelming majority of the accidents are caused by failure to yield and improper lane usage both of which would be considered driver error. This pilot program will look see if accidents can be reduced by only using one lane. During the pilot program, the City will monitor the intersection for accidents and intersection capacity.
During the closure, detours will be provided. Once reopened, drivers using the roundabout are urged to pay attention to the new traffic pattern. Longer delays are expected at the intersection as a result of the reduction of lanes during certain times of the day.
