Rockford PD Press Release:
On Saturday, June 5, 2021, at approximately 10:26 a.m., Rockford Police
officers responded to a residence in the 5200 block of Linden Rd. in reference to an
unresponsive female. Rockford Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and found
26-year-old Ashley Ibarra deceased inside the apartment.
Rockford Police Detectives were called in to investigate Ibarra’s death and interviewed
Ibarra’s fiancé Alejandro Vargas. The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office later
determined that Ibarra had a lethal level of fentanyl in her system.
Rockford Police Detectives obtained new information in late 2023, and after a review of
the facts of the case, The Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized the
charges listed below. Vargas is currently in custody in the Illinois Department of
Corrections on unrelated charges.
Alejandro Vargas, 33, Rockford
First Degree Murder
Drug-Induced Homicide
The charges are merely accusations and all individuals are considered innocent unless
proven guilty in a court of law.
