Good morning everyone,

Yesterday, the NWS predicted large hail would probably fall in our area.
And once again, the NWS was spot on.
Kudos to our local weather men and women.

The NWS had issued a tornado watch until 10 pm.

Storms fired up to our South, producing severe storms that produced a few unconfirmed tornadoes.

As the cells that were producing the unconfirmed tornadoes in Lee and Dekalb.

A small cell popped up and developed quickly, just to the North of those.
This cell is what hit Winnebago County approx. 7:30 pm until approx. 8 pm.

A small severe cell popped up and then formed into a supercell.

According to the NWS,
Hail the size of ping pongs hit the Pecatonica area around 7:26 pm.
The storms produced a lot of cloud to cloud lighting.
Electrifying our skies.
Bringing an amazing lightning show for February!

The cell moved in the NE motion across Winnebago County.

As the storm tracked across Winnebago County
It continued to drop large hail.

Around 7:28 pm the cell dropped  0.7 hail in the village of Winnebago,
And approx. 7:54 pm the storm dropped 0.75 hail near the South Beloit area.

According to the NWS the following locations had either reports of a funnel cloud or a tornado on the ground.

• 2/27 6:57 PM Kane 2 WSW Big Rock IL TORNADO
• 2/27 7:05 PM Kane 3 NNW Sugar Grove IL TORNADO
• 2/27 7:20 PM Kane 1 ESE Geneva IL FUNNEL CLOUD
• 2/27 7:36 PM Cook 1 SW Inverness IL TORNADO
• 2/27 9:17 PM Lake 2 NE Gary Airport IN FUNNEL CLOUD
• 2/27 9:18 PM LMZ744 3 NE Gary IN WATERSPOUT

And there are reports of approx. 40 different locations that was hit by hail.

.DISCUSSION…
Issued at 247 AM CST Wed Feb 28 2024

Vigorous upper trough and associated deep surface low are
quickly moving across the area. Area of f-gen driven
precipitation in the left exit region of strong upper level jet
is rapidly translating eastward across the CWA early this
morning. The precip has been outrunning the deeper cold air mass
a bit and precip has been starting as rain and changing to a
brief period of snow before ending, with brief period of sleet
or freezing rain in the transition zone. Back edge of the precip
is already moving into the western suburbs and should end prior
to sunrise. Could see some lingering flurries early this morning
as very strong cold air advection squeezes some flakes out of
the lingering MVFR deck. These clouds should clear the area
later this morning with skies becoming sunny this afternoon. It
will be deceptive sunshine as temperatures will be 40-50F colder
than yesterday afternoon and gusty winds will only make it feel
even colder. Northwest winds should gradually ease during the
day.

Pattern continues to look very progressive with winds turning
south already by late tonight with warm air advection starting
in earnest Thursday afternoon and evening. Warming should
continue into the weekend with several days in the 60s expected
Saturday through Monday, with 70s possible Sunday. Background
synoptic winds this weekend may keep enough of a slight easterly
component to result in some lake cooling for the IL shore.

A mostly dry pattern is expected through the weekend. There is a
southern stream shortwave that looks to pass mostly south of our
CWA Friday. We’ll need to keep an eye on that for the
possibility of some showers sneaking north into mainly our
southern CWA. Otherwise, the next organized chance of rain
should arrive early next week as some progressive troughs move
across the region. Guidance varies with intensity and timing of
these waves, so made no changes from the NBM pop at this
distance.

...WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM CST WEDNESDAY...

* WHAT...Northwest winds to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph.

* WHERE...Portions of central, east central, north central and
  northeast Illinois.

* WHEN...Until 6 AM CST Wednesday.

* IMPACTS...Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects.
  Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may
  result.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high
profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 78 WAS SET AT ROCKFORD IL YESTERDAY.
THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 68 SET IN 1976.

THIS ALSO BREAKS THE PREVIOUS RECORD WARMEST HIGH FOR THE MONTH OF
FEBRUARY AND METEOROLOGICAL WINTER (DEC-FEB). THE PREVIOUS RECORD
WAS 73 SET JUST ONE DAY AGO ON FEB 26 2024.

A RECORD WARM LOW TEMPERATURE OF 45 WAS SET AT ROCKFORD IL YESTERDAY.
THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 38 SET IN 1944.

ARTERIAL SALTING OPERATION

ROCKFORD – February 28, 2024 – The City of Rockford Public Works Department began salting
Arterial Routes at 4:00 AM today.
Decisions about further deployment will be made, as needed, according to developing
conditions.
Citizens are urged to follow at a safe distance behind snowplows. This will prevent the salt that
is being spread from hitting your vehicle and the added distance also allows a driver room to
back up if needed.
