City of Rockford Rolls Out New Carts

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The City will begin rolling out new garbage and recycling carts the week of February 26. Rockford residents will receive one 96-gallon refuse cart and one 65-gallon recycling cart. These carts are designed to be lifted mechanically by garbage trucks and feature a permanently attached lid and handle that allows for easy maneuvering.

The recycling cart is being provided, in part, by a grant from The Recycling Partnership, a national NGO advancing the circular economy by building a better recycling system in U.S. communities and states. The City was selected to receive grant support because of its dedication to advancing recycling in the community. The grant from The Recycling Partnership, with support from the American Beverage’s Every Bottle Back initiative and the Illinois Beverage Association, as well as a plastic resin donation from Dow to produce the recycling carts, will provide approximately 50,000 new recycling carts and includes funding for recycling education and outreach.

The City’s recycling program will remain single-stream, so sorting recyclable items is not necessary. Residents will be able to place all recyclable items directly into a new, larger recycling container. The carts will replace the smaller blue bins currently used for residential recycling. Recycling totes are an efficient way to increase and sustain higher recycling rates. It increases collection efficiency, provides residents with more room to store recyclables, and helps prevent materials from blowing away and becoming litter.

The City asks that residents continue to do their part by placing only recyclable materials in their carts, including glass bottles and jars, aluminum and steel cans, food and beverage cartons, paper products (including newspapers and flattened cardboard), and empty plastic bottles and containers. To help limit contamination, give food and drink containers a quick rinse and then place them directly into the recycling cart.

Some items that cannot be recycled include plastic bags, paper towels, pizza boxes, electrical equipment, batteries, and clothing. These items often get mixed into recycling carts because of “wishcycling,” or the hope that they can be recycled. While well-intentioned, non-recyclable items cause serious issues.
