Deny parole to Curtis Brownell for the murder of Louise Marie Betts

This is regarding keeping the murderer of Louise Betts, a 1977 Harlem High School student, in prison.

The murderer is up for parole again.

There seems to be so little many of us can do to fight crime but signing this petition will help to keep this monster out of area.

Court records show:

Through a written statement made by the defendant and admitted at trial, it was revealed that on September 27, 1977, the defendant picked up the victim, Louise M. Betts, while she was hitchhiking on a road in Boone County. The defendant held a jack knife to the victim’s throat and drove to a road with cornfields on either side. The defendant stopped the car and told the victim to get out and take off her clothes. He then engaged in sexual intercourse with her. The defendant thereafter attempted to strangle the victim, but she was able to get up and run an undetermined distance. The defendant caught her, strangled her again, and then stood or jumped on her stomach and neck. The defendant dragged the victim farther into the cornfield and left her. He said he felt her pulse before he left her but he did not know whether she was dead or not.

The Change.org petition says:
Curtis Brownell is currently incarcerated in the Illinois Prison System for the aggravated kidnapping, rape and brutal murder of Louise Marie Betts in September of 1977.

Leaving her body in a cornfield only to be found the following Spring and the aggravated kidnapping, armed robbery, armed violence and attempted murder of a second female victim who was pregnant with her first child just 4 short months later.  (Very close too, if not the same field the new hospital sits on) 

He has a long history prior to his first murder of violence against women.  He also admitted during a psychiatric evaluation to criminal sexual abuse of a child.

During the sentencing phase, psychiatrists testified that Brownell had intense anger towards women and would be a danger if released.

He was not remorseful or contrite for his actions.

He was twice sentenced to death for the murder of Louise Marie Betts and those sentences were twice overturned by the Illinois Supreme Court.

He is serving an indeterminate sentence of 100-600 years.

Because his crimes were committed prior to February 1978, he is entitled to parole opportunities on a 1-to-5-year basis.

The family and friends of Curtis Brownell’s victims request your assistance in keeping this violent,
habitual criminal in prison where he belongs so that no family ever has to suffer the pain and loss that continues to this day.

 Please sign this petition for the Illinois Parole Board to deny Curtis Brownell parole and not to receive another hearing for 5 years.
