On Saturday, May 27th, at 1754 hours, the Rockford Fire Department responded to a report of smoke
coming from the vacant Church School building located at 1419 Blaisdell Street. The first fire engine
arrived and reported smoke showing from a second floor window. Further investigation showed a small
fire in a classroom on the second floor of the building. The fire was quickly controlled with one
hoseline. This is the second small fire in this building within the last three days.
There were no injuries to the public or to firefighters.
The building has been vacant for many years and has a chain link fence around the perimeter. Over the
years, the fencing has fallen into disrepair and vandals have been able to enter the building illegally.
The building has significant structural damage and poses a risk to the public and to first responders. It
is scheduled for demolition in the near future. Anyone having information regarding either fire is asked
to call the Rockford Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Division at 779-348-7172.
