Update:
After Rockford PD released that info and RS posted the Rockford PD press release.
This was posted by a RS source Destiny Paige  saying that it was not a home invasion.

Rockford Man Succumbs to Injury Sustained in Home Invasion

ROCKFORD, Ill. – Early this morning at approximately 1:50 a.m., Rockford Police officers responded to a
residence in the 1800 block of Green Street for reports of a male subject allegedly attempting to break in.

The residents, an adult male and adult female, advised the suspect, a 44-year-old male, attempted to force
open the door, but they were able to block the door from being forced open. The alleged suspect then broke out
a window and proceeded to strike the resident with a piece of lumber.

As the alleged suspect continued to attempt to gain entry, the male resident retrieved a kitchen knife and was able to strike the alleged suspect in the neck/shoulder area.

He fled after being stabbed and was located in the street in front of the residence.

Rockford Police officers arrived to the scene and immediately began life-saving measures,
but he was unfortunately pronounced deceased.
