Rockford Police Department Hiring for Experienced Officers
–Yesterday, February 13, 2023, the Rockford Police Department started accepting
applications for lateral officers. The lateral entry program seeks qualified, sworn police officers
who represent the diversity and experiences that are shared by the community. Candidates must
have strong verbal communication, interpersonal and writing skills, and should possess common
sense and problem-solving ability.
The program includes training and orientation which consists of in-house city school for up to
seven weeks depending on experience. Lateral candidates must complete all testing deemed
necessary by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners.
Lateral candidates must also meet all of the requirements for an entry-level Rockford Police
Officer and must possess a valid Illinois Law Enforcement Officer certificate from the Illinois Law
Enforcement Training and Standards Board. Out of State certificates are allowed with the State of
Illinois training board’s approval. You must be a currently working as a sworn Police Officer to
apply. Newly hired individuals that are certified as a law enforcement officer shall be paid the
appropriate pay step for previous years of law enforcement service, up to a maximum of five
years, with a pay range of $68,310-$90,475.
All qualifications for lateral police officers are set within the Rules and Regulations of the Board of
Fire and Police Commissioners, City of Rockford Ordinances Section 2.29 and all applicable
statutes. Interested applicants may visit www.rpdwantsyou.com for a complete list of
qualifications and disqualifications. Applications are available on the website until February 28,
2023.
