We post everything on our website first!

When severe weather is forecasted for our area,
One of everyone’s favorite things to listen to on the scanner is the local storm spotters!
Northern Illinois SKYWARN spotters.

Quick reminder:
Severe weather can and will happen at anytime of the day/night, and any day of the year.

We have many of our fans asking us,
“How can they become involved, when severe weather hits?”

It is actually pretty simple.
You will need to do the following steps.

It is that simple!

We highly recommend getting your ham radio license,
to participate in the Northern Illinois SKYWARN activations.

You can learn more about Ham Radio at Click Here
Plus you can talk on the ham radio whenever severe weather in not in our area.  🙂

Northern Illinois SKYWARN is a ham based SKYWARN community that provides real time weather information,
when severe weather hits our area.

That is why it is important to get your ham radio license after you pass the lessons.
So you can relay your severe weather reports 🙂

A lot of times,
You will know what is happening with the weather,
BEFORE the local news and the NWS sends out their weather alerts!
In severe weather situations, seconds could literally mean life or death.

Northern Illinois SKYWARN usually has spotters providing real time weather information.
From all over Winnebago County area.
You will learn where the worst of the storm is at, and where it is headed.

Winnebago County has had its share of severe weather events over the years.
Most notably, the  TWO tornadoes that touched down and tore through Winnebago County.

You can watch this video of the tornado, as it rips across the Eastern side of Winnebago County.
The video was filmed by Joshua Ergle from the new Javon Bea Hospital, on E Riverside, facing West.
Just seconds before it hit Farm and Fleet.

I personally recommend the Northern Illinois SKYWARN.
They are very professional and provide real time updates on the weather.
A lot of times the  NWS learns their information, from the Northern Illinois SKYWARN spotters.
So they know when to put out a warning in Winnebago County.

Remember, a WARNING means that severe weather IS happening or is about to happen!
And you need to seek shelter ASAP.

The Northern Illinois SKYWARN spotters are usually the ones
That relay those extremely important weather details to the National Weather Service (NWS),
so they can put out those warnings for our area.

You can listen in to the Northern Illinois SKYWARN spotters on  147.195
You will know where the primary threat is, and when to seek shelter
Way before your cell phones go off with the warning.
Seconds mean life or death, when severe weather hits!
