UPDATE:
2600 block of Conklin Avenue

The Rockford Fire Department responded to a group of interconnected 8-family apartment units for a
report of a fire. The first arriving fire vehicle arrived within 4 minutes to find smoke and fire in the
basement of the building. Additional fire units arrived and performed search of all apartment units.

After evacuating the entire building firefighters spent several hours of aggressive interior fire fighting
attempting to extinguish a fire that spread through void spaces inside the apartment building. 2 cats were
rescued and multiple residents were removed by firefighters. Power had to be shut off to the entire
block during firefighting.

The building suffered major fire damage and is condemned.

Due to power outage, the adjacent apartment buildings are also condemned. In total, 24 apartments and 32 people are
displaced. The Red Cross and City of Rockford are assisting with disaster recovery efforts.

The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental and is related to hot materials that were placed into storage in the
basement. The financial loss of the fire is substantial and yet to be fully determined.
