Accidents and slide-offs are increasing in number across the area as

Stay off the roads if you can!
Untreated roads will only become more icy over time.
Ramps and overpasses will be especially slick.

...Patchy Freezing Drizzle Mid Afternoon Into Early Evening...

Patches of freezing drizzle are likely to develop across far
northern Illinois this afternoon and early evening, with the most
steady freezing drizzle expected south of I-90. Near and north of
I-90, localized areas of icy surfaces still may occur. Secondary
roads, bridges and overpasses, parking lots, and sidewalks will
be most susceptible.

Stay tuned to the forecast, and if you notice drizzle falling,
use caution when traveling as temperatures will be below freezing.

Light icing ahead this afternoon and evening…
Freezing drizzle will spread over this mid afternoon and continue into early evening. Most susceptible to icing will be untreated surfaces, but even treated ones may have icing because of the cold ground, especially secondary roads, bridges, parking lots, and sidewalks.
The second image here is a look at forecast onset timing this afternoon. Light icing is expected area-wide, though slightly less confidence toward the Wisconsin state line. Prepare for extra travel time and some hazardous road conditions.

Although the temperature will rise toward freezing this evening, the (arctic tundra-like) ground will remain cold enough for ice to form. Ice is especially hard to see at night! Be careful on evening walks and take it slow on roads
