Aggravated Robbery: On Sunday, January 6, 2019, shortly after 7:30 p.m., Rockford Police officers were called to Best Buy (281 Deane Drive) for a robbery. There, officers learned the 19-year-old suspect entered the store and loaded a cart with video gaming equipment. An employee approached the suspect, who then implied he had a weapon and fled the store. The suspect vehicle, a blue minivan, was located and stopped a short time later near East State Street and Mill Road. Officers took the four occupants in the minivan into custody. Upon further review of the case, the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized the below listed charges.

Jakari Smith, 19, Rockford: Aggravated Robbery

Torrence Lewis, 21, Rockford: Aggravated Robbery

Smith and Lewis were lodged in the Winnebago County Jail. A 16-year-old female was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center for probation violation. The fourth person in the suspect vehicle was released without charges.

The charges against Smith, Lewis, and the juvenile female are merely accusations. They are considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Sources are reporting an armed robbery at the Best Buy just before 8 pm.

RPD confirmed a robbery call at the Best Buy, but have not released any other details at this time.

Unknown if it is related to this incident or not:

The RPD had a dark colored van stopped and had the occupants at gunpoint at E State and Mill around the same time the robbery call happened.
