Snow is likely to develop over the area late Tuesday afternoon and continue into the evening before gradually changing to freezing rain from south to north during the late evening and overnight hours. The potential combination snow accumulations up to 7 inches and ice accumulations up to 0.2 inches may create hazardous travel across the area during this time, especially west of the Chicago metro where higher snow and ice accumulations are expected. Warmer air is expected to move into the area on Wednesday so the threat of icing and snow covered roads should diminish during the day for most of the area.
Here is a graphic showing the approximate timing of the precipitation and when it will change over between different precipitation types for select cities. The common theme that will occur is precipitation starting off as snow, then changing over to sleet and freezing rain overnight Tuesday before changing over to rain Wednesday morning and potentially changing over to light snow on Wednesday afternoon before ending
