BPD release yesterday:
We received a tip today that a wanted federal fugitive, Fabian Jones, 28, was located in the 900 block of Gerald Avenue. A tactical situation began at that location around 11:30 am this morning.
Uniformed officers and officers working in the Violent Crimes Interdiction Team confirmed that Jones was in the house; we, along with the U.S. Marshals, have been seeking him since March 2020. Jones is known to be armed and dangerous, so we involved the Tactical Unit and the U.S. Marshals as we looked to safely take Jones into custody.
Jones refused to exit the residence until around 1:20 pm when he exited with a bottle of liquor and another object in his hands. He refused to listen to officer’s demands to drop the items and go to the ground so we could safely take him into custody. During this time, an officer deployed a less-lethal beanbag round at him and Jones was safely taken into custody. The sound emitted using a less-lethal device is loud and can be mistaken for the sound of a firearm. However, no gunshots were fired at the scene.
Jones was arrested for a federal felony fugitive probation warrant, resisting arrest and felony bail jumping.
Three officers received minor injuries while the crowd of onlookers became unruly. The onlookers were trying to gain access to the suspect.
Four additional people were encountered while we conducted a search warrant investigation at the home. Upon entering the home, officers smelled natural gas in home, which had filled the home and created a dangerous situation. Thank you to Beloit Fire and Alliant Energy who ensured that the situation was safe prior to us entering to conduct the search warrant.
Jones was charged in March with being a felon in possession of a firearm and disorderly conduct with the use of a dangerous weapon.
Thank you to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, South Beloit Police Department and the Town of Beloit Police Department for their assistance with crowd control and traffic management. Thank you to the U.S. Marshals for your ongoing partnership.
