Beloit: Shortly before midnight, an officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation at Wisconsin and Henry avenues. The driver did not stop for our officer and continued southbound at a low rate of speed. When the driver failed to stop at the stop sign at Harrison and White Avenue, our officer terminated pursuit. A short time later, the suspect’s vehicle crashed into another vehicle at Harrison and Woodward avenues.
The suspect’s vehicle then crashed into the gas line on Harrison Avenue while the other vehicle hit a pole and landed on its roof. Both drivers were transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect driver, a 29-year-old Beloit male, was taken into custody for fleeing and other violations. The investigation is ongoing and we have asked the Rock County Sheriff’s Office to conduct the traffic accident investigation.
Update, 2:22 a.m.: The gas leak has been shut off in the area and crews are working to check all locations to ensure that there is no additional risk. We expect this to take at least 30 minutes.
Thank you to Beloit College for opening up Pearsons Hall as an evacuation site. We appreciate the help.
Original: We have evacuated homes in the area of Park Avenue, Wisconsin Avenue, Clary Street and White Avenue due to a gas leak caused by a traffic accident. Please avoid the area until further notice.
