Sources are reporting another phone scam currently on going in the area.
Sources said: ” They tried to say they were from comed and that they were on their way to cut off her electricity if she did not pay within 30 minutes and that they would reimburse her the money back at 4pm today if she got a prepaid card from family dollar. The number they called from was 1-888-285-3922. They told her to make a payment using a family dollar prepaid card or they were already on their way to shut off the electricity in 30 minutes. Somehow they were going to reimburse the money back to the card at 4pm. They are using different numbers because after she got off with the real comed, the scammers called from another number.”
We have had reports of similar incidents but saying they are from NICOR, COMED, Local Water Dept. and also some cell companies.
If you do not recognize the number, do NOT answer it. If you do get a call like this, hang up on them. DO NOT send them any money! And to be sure it is legit, be sure to call the company they said they were with. Such as this they said they were with COMED. Hang up on the person who called you, and you call COMED to verify the legitimacy of the call.
