Flooding is occurring, do not drive into flood waters, Turn Around Don’t Drown!
A strong storm system will impact the area through tonight with a steady soaking rain along with windy conditions. Total amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected across most of the area. A Flood Watch is in effect for portions of northern and central Illinois.
The area of greatest concern for wind gusts potentially upward of 45-50 mph is across portions of central Illinois into central Indiana late this evening through the overnight. Another area of concern is for areas near Lake Michigan, where gusts could be as high as 45 mph at times this evening into the overnight.
The winds will build large waves up to 8-11 feet on southwest Lake Michigan through this evening. At least minor lakeshore flooding is expected for portions of the Cook and Lake (IL) county shore, particularly the most vulnerable spots along the Chicago shore such as parts of the bike bath. A Lakeshore Flood Advisory is in effect through 5am Sunday.
Large waves could knock unsuspecting onlookers off their feet and into the lake. Avoid flood prone areas along the lakeshore and stay off of structures such as piers, jetties, and breakwalls.
