Sources are reporting at least one person has been injured during a chemical spill at a Rockford business. It happened this morning at Viking Chemical at 1827 18th Ave. A valve broke on a tanker truck and spilled approx. 4,000 gallons of caustic potash (Potassium hydroxide). The victim was transported to the local hospital for burn injuries.
Potassium hydroxide is an inorganic compound with the formula KOH, and is commonly called caustic potash. Along with sodium hydroxide, this colorless solid is a prototypical strong base. It has many industrial and niche applications, most of which exploit its caustic nature and its reactivity toward acids
