Message From The Local Crimestoppers in regards to Miss Carly’s

Update: Local crimestoppers didn’t pay her. But the crimestoppers in Wisconsin paid her only $500 for turning these very violent criminals into the police.

The Rockford Area Crimestoppers Board would like to extend its appreciation to Miss Carley and the actions that she took in helping to bring two fugitives from the State of Wisconsin into custody.

Although we can understand her frustration in not receiving a reward from our local Crimestoppers, the Crimestoppers organization is bound by national rules, regulations and by-laws that specifically outline how rewards are earned and received. The integrity of the Crimestoppers program is based on uncompromised anonymity.

For that reason, persons who report a crime directly to the Crimestoppers hotline are processed with a confidential informant number that follows them to the banking institution which releases their rewards. Persons who call 9-1-1 when they witness or have knowledge of a crime or important information to share with the police, do so outside of the Crimestoppers purview.

It is absolutely important to remember that in an emergency or time sensitive situation, contacting 9-1-1 is the right thing to do . This scenario does not qualify that person to receive a reward under the Crimestoppers program. Certainly Miss Carley did the right thing by contacting 9-1-1 instead of Crimestoppers and because of her actions, the State of Wisconsin can pursue justice for the fugitives and the City of Rockford could rest easily with those persons apprehended.

Crimestoppers recognizes that citizens in Rockford call 9-1-1 on a regular basis to help police apprehend criminals and to do their part in keeping our commuity safe. Crimestoppers is just another tool by which to help our law enforcement community. In order to be effective and relevant, we are obligated to conduct ourselves in accordance with our bylaws and nationally recognized processes.

What a lot of people do not realize is:

We did a story on this topic years ago. About the crimestopper rewards.

The suspect in question pays the reward money.    Yes, you heard this right!   When everything is all said and done in the courts.  The court adds on a “crimestopper fee”  for the suspect to pay.

So in reality, crimestoppers is just a middleman.

The suspect pays the crimestoppers fee that the courts made the suspect pay.  When the suspect decides to pay that crimestopper fee from the court, is when the person who turned them in, gets it.

A lot of people do not know or understand this.   Crimestoppers is a middleman.

They don’t actually pay you for your anonymous tips.

It is the suspect who was ordered from the courts to pay a fee to crimestoppers, and the suspect pays that fee. Then the reward is paid.

Update from Robert Denaro: they pay when they are convicted…they don’t wait for the the convict to pay the fine…crimestoppers collect the money if they pay fine but crime stoppers still pay regardless to convict does.
