Rockford Scanner: Fatal Accident Involving A Highway Maintenance Worker in Illinois



The Following Preliminary Information is Being Released by the Illinois State Police District 17

WHAT: Motor Vehicle vs. Pedestrian Fatal Traffic Crash
WHERE: Interstate 80 westbound at milepost 44 (approximately ½ mile west of Illinois Route 40), Bureau County
WHEN: Sept. 9, 2020 at approximately 10:10 a.m.
VEHICLE: Unit 1- 2002 Red Honda Van
DRIVER: Unit 1- Robert D. Bowen, 84-year-old male of Macomb, IL (Transported to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries)
PEDESTRIAN: 47-year old male of Chicago, IL (Deceased)

PRELIMINARY: A preliminary investigation indicates the following occurred: Unit 1 was traveling westbound on Interstate 80 approaching milepost 44 in the left lane. The pedestrian, a highway maintenance worker, was standing outside of his maintenance truck, equipped with an arrow board and crash attenuator, near milepost 44 while assisting with traffic control in the maintenance zone. As Unit 1 was traveling in the area, for unknown reasons Unit 1 struck the pedestrian. The Bureau County Coroner’s Office pronounced the pedestrian deceased on scene.

All westbound lanes of Interstate 80 were closed at approximately 10:55 a.m. for the traffic crash investigation. Traffic was rerouted to Illinois Route 40 from Interstate 80 westbound. All westbound lanes of Interstate 80 were reopened at approximately 12:45 p.m. The investigation is open and ongoing. No further information is available at this time.

CHARGES: Unit 1 driver was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way to any authorized vehicle or pedestrian working within a highway construction or maintenance zone. Any additional charges are pending further investigation. All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
