The City of Beloit Police Department, in collaboration with the School District of Beloit, is investigating the circumstances involving a student who brought a weapon to Todd Elementary School.
The loaded handgun was observed in a backpack by a teacher, who immediately confiscated the backpack and took appropriate precautions in the classroom, ensuring the safety of other students. The Beloit Police Department responded to the school at 8:42 a.m.
Due to the age of the minor involved, the City of Beloit Police Department is unable to refer criminal charges against the student pursuant to Wisconsin State Statutes. Beloit police officers conducted an investigation into how the student acquired the weapon, which resulted in the arrest of the student’s 36-year-old stepfather for leaving a loaded firearm within reach or easy access of a child. The stepfather was booked and released and charges will be referred to the Rock County District Attorney’s Office. Child Protective Services is also investigating. The age and gender of the student is not being released at this time.
The School District of Beloit is cooperating with the investigation and reports that the student will not be in school tomorrow or for the foreseeable future.
The City of Beloit Police Department and the School District of Beloit will not be conducting additional interviews at this time.
