On Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at approximately 2:05 a.m., officers of the Rockford Police Department responded to the 1000 block of North Main Street in reference to a complaint of an armed robbery which took place in the 400 block of North Main Street. Upon arrival, officers met with the victim who was able to identify the suspect as 40-year-old Mark Cooper.
Officers checked the 400 block of North Main Street for Cooper and were unable to locate him. Cooper was later located in the area of North Court Street and Mulberry Street where he was taken into custody without incident.
The facts of the case were reviewed with the Winnebago County States Attorney’s Office and armed robbery charges were authorized against Cooper. Cooper was transported and lodged in the Winnebago County Jail.
No further information is available at this time. Additional information may be released at it becomes available.
The charges against Cooper are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Within the last few hours there have been a couple armed robberies.

On 2-22-17 at approximately 2:00 AM Officers of the Rockford Police Department met with the victim of an Armed Robbery which had just occurred. The victim stated he and a friend were walking through Beattie Park located at 401 N. Main St. when they were confronted by a black male. The victim stated the black male produced a handgun and demanded the victims money. The victim stated the black male removed his money from his wallet and left the area walking. The victim provided officers with a description of the black male. Upon checking the area officers located a suspect matching the description and took him into custody without incident. The investigation is on-going at this time.
On Wednesday, 2/22/17 at around 1:15 A.M. Rockford Police responded to the 2000 block of Broadway in reference to a strong arm robbery complaint. The victim, a 57 yr old white male Rockford resident, stated he was walking to work on Broadway when he was approached by an unknown white male. The white male suspect asked the victim for a cigarette. The victim told the suspect he did not have anything for him. The suspect then punched the victim in the face several times and threw him to the ground. The suspect then kicked the victim who was laying on the ground. The suspect then took the victim’s wallet and fled northbound. The victim sustained minor injuries from the incident and did not wish to be transported to the hospital.
The suspect was described as the following: White male, around 30 years old, about 6’0” tall, around 150 lbs, wearing a white/gray hooded sweatshirt, gray/white baseball hat and blue jeans.
