Village suspends burning of yard waste in response to Covid-19
MACHESNEY PARK, IL – The Village Board approved an emergency temporary
measure to suspend yard waste burning for the remainder of April, starting on Monday April 13th.
Trustees took action amidst concerns that open burning of yard waste can have a negative effect on
those that may be suffering from the COVID-19 novel coronavirus, which impacts the respiratory
Recreational campfires that are contained within a fire-safe vessel, pit or ring are allowed, as long
as leaves or garbage are not burned within those campfires. Wood used in recreational campfires
should not exceed 22 inches in length and 11 inches in diameter.
Village officials are asking residents to be considerate of their neighbors and to voluntarily not burn
yard waste. Additionally, the Village is urging those who burn recreational campfires to monitor
and adjust the size of their fires so that smoke does not impact nearby neighbors.
Village Ordinance normally allows residents to burn yard waste during the months of April and
November. Yard waste generally includes leaves and sticks that have been pruned from landscaping
on a property.
