The Byron Police Department, along with assistance from the Ogle County Sheriff and Illinois State Police, are now searching for a man wanted in the murder of Emory Weems, 55, of Byron.

On Thursday, Feb. 11 2010 at approximately 3 p.m., the Byron Police Department responded to the report of a gunshot wound at 228 W. Merchant, Byron, with the Byron Fire Department. Byron Ambulance transported Weems to a local hospital where he died on Monday.

The Byron Police Department and Ogle County Sheriff’s Office are searching for a suspect in the case, described as a white male, approximately 30 to 40-years of age with brown hair, clean shaven, approximately 6-feet tall with a stocky build, leaving the scene on foot.

Witnesses say the suspect was wearing a black baseball cap (with an adjustable rear strap), black pants and a multi-colored jacket with a “shield-like” or “knight-like” emblem on the backside. The sleeves were black, the chest area was white, shoulders were red and the jacket was collarless.

He may have later left the area in a four-door tan medium sized car.

Byron Police Chief Todd Murray said the department is searching for a motive in the case.

“We do not believe there was a break-in in this incident,” he noted.

Weems lived at the home with two of his children.

Investigators say that any patrons of the Byron Library who may have been in the area between 2 and 4 p.m. on Thursday should contact the Byron Police Department at 815-979-4462. Anyone with information may also contact Ogle-Lee Crimestoppers at 888-228-4488. Crimestoppers will pay a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest(s) of persons responsible for this crime.
